An elderly couple in Austin, Texas have just be crowned the oldest married couple in the world!
Many people will strive to reach this age, but few will ever get there..
The couple have a combined age of 211 years old. John is 106, and Charlotte is 105. This officially makes them the oldest married couple, according to Guinness World Records.
What’s more, on December 15 of this year, they will celebrate 80 years of marriage.
Their love story began back in 1934 when they met at a college lecture at the University of Texas. They married five years later in December 1939, and paid just $7 for their hotel room on their honeymoon.
So what on earth is the magic secret to the couple’s record-breaking marriage, as well as surpassing 100 years of life?
John told USA Today in 2017:
“Living in moderation. We never overdo anything. Eat well. Sleep well. Don’t overdrink. Don’t overeat. And exercise regularly.”
John is also the oldest living former UT football player.
For the past 84 years the couple has attended at least one UT football game a season.
Charlotte added:
“We had such a good time when John retired. We traveled a lot. We just stay busy all the time, and I’m sure that helps.”
The couple now live at Longhorn Village, a senior living community for UT staff and alumni. They are fit and healthy and say they have a lot longer to go.
