Mr. Trash Wheel Is Gobbling Up Millions Of Pounds Of Plastic From Baltimore Harbor!

Millions of pounds of trash has been removed from the Baltimore harbor and many species of fish and wildlife have been saved thanks to a giant, floating, trash-eating machine known as “Mr. Trash Wheel”.

The machine was first installed in Baltimore back in 2014 and to date, the device has gobbled up 1,094,402 Styrofoam cups and containers, 953,681 plastic bottles, 676,016 plastic bags, 150 miles of cigarette butts, 4,078 leather balls, a working guitar, 1 beer keg, and an oven. That’s pretty impressive!

This floating mechanism is semi-autonomous and is solar powered meaning it’s emission free. The solar power drives a conveyor belt and this scoops up the piles of plastic and trash out of the water and then dumps them onto a separate barge for recycling and general disposal.

The belt is very strong. It has the power to hoist heavy things such as trees, ovens, mattresses and kegs from the water and into the barge dumpster.

Before and After

This awesome machine is the brain child of engineer and sailor, John Kellett.

For almost 20 years. John saw an ever growing problem of trash pollution near Baltimore’s waterfront, inspiring him to create Mr Trash Wheel.

John Kellett, creator of the fantastic mechanism

Kellett has future plans to install trash wheels in other cities in the States like California, New York and Hawaii. He even say he would go far as introducing the device and internationally.

John has recently decided to add more trash gobbling power to Baltimore harbor by introducing two cousin interceptors named Professor Trash Wheel in 2016 and Captain Trash Wheel in 2018.

As is standard with all of Kellett’s machines, the devices feature very recognizable cartoon eyes on the front of the ‘face’.

So cute!

Mr Trash Wheel

Just imagine if every harbor around the world had a Mr. Trash Wheel!

So many millions of pounds of trash and plastic waste could be collected from the water, transforming the natural habitat of many animals and combating the ever growing problem of pollution.

If you’d like to see the work that the wheels are doing for yourself then you can watch a live stream of Mr. Trash Wheel consuming pounds of waste from the harbor, on its website.
