Supermarkets in Asia are quickly adopting an idea from Thailand that makes use of banana leaves instead of plastic bags as an alternative.
Vietnam ranks about number 4 in the world for the most amount of plastic trash dumped in the ocean, this is why this is such a big deal.
The name of the company that has been noted as the first to try this idea is called “Rimping supermarket” in Chiangmai, Thailand.
This genius idea, was an instant hit among citizens and around the world, and soon caught the attention of other Vietnamese supermarkets.
The good news is, that other big supermarket chains in Vietnam, namely Lotte Mart, Saigon Co.op, and Big C, have all followed in their footsteps and are now experimenting with banana leaves as a packaging alternative.
A recent interview with VnExpress, with a representative from the Lotte Mart chain said that they’re still in the experimenting phase but are planning to replace plastic with leaves nationwide very soon!
This is great news! Hopefully other countries and cities will see this and start following suit because the feedback from customers has been incredible, with people even claiming to want to buy even more product to support such a genius idea.
A local customer named Hoa was quoted as saying:
“When I see vegetables wrapped in these beautiful banana leaves I’m more willing to buy in larger quantities. I think this initiative will help locals be more aware of protecting the environment.”
Below is a video showing and explaining more about this wonderful new trend.
